Price Journal

Privacy policy

Effective 29 October 2026

T2Lazy makes the Price Journal app ("the app", "the Service") for Android. The app is free to use. This page explains what information the app collects, why, where it is kept and what your choices are. We will not use or share your information except as this policy describes.

In short
  • You do not need an email address, phone number or password to use the app.
  • Your shopping lists, recipes and household are kept on our server so they sync between phones and with the people you share them with.
  • Prices and products you record are shared with everyone who uses the app. Your name is not shown with them.
  • Your location and loyalty cards stay on your phone. They are never sent to us.
  • The app has no adverts and no analytics or tracking, and we never sell your information.

Information we collect and why

Your account

The first time the app goes online it creates an account for you without asking for any details. The account holds a random identifier, your phone's model name (for example "Pixel 8"), which helps us fix problems, and, if you choose to give one, the name you show to your household. Your household sees that name next to items you add or tick.

Shopping lists, recipes and households

Your lists, list items, recipes and ingredients, and the households you create or join, are stored on our server. They sync to your other phones and to the members of your household, and nobody else can see them. Anyone you give an invite code, QR code or invite link can join your household and see its lists and recipes.

Prices and products you record

When you record a shelf price or a special, add a product, or add a barcode, we store it with the store, the time, and the account that recorded it. Prices and products are what make the app useful to everyone, so other users see them. They do not see your name or account with them.

Reports

When you use "Something wrong?" on a product or store, we receive the kind of problem you picked, the message you wrote, the product or store it is about, and your account.

Information that stays on your phone

Users of the old Price Journal app

If you used the earlier version of Price Journal, the update signs in once with your old Firebase account so that we can recognise you and give you back the shopping lists you had on our old server. After that, Firebase is not used again. The update also moves the cards, favourite stores, recipes and lists that were saved on your phone by the old app into the new app, on your phone.

Server logs

Like most online services, our server records each request it receives: your IP address, the time, what was asked for, the app's version and the result. We use these logs only to keep the service secure and to fix problems, and we keep them for a short time.

What we do not do

Where your information is kept

Our server is hosted by DigitalOcean in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, in the European Union, whose data protection law gives a level of protection comparable to South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). Connections between the app and the server are encrypted (HTTPS). We make a backup every night and keep backups on the same server for 14 days.

Service providers

We use these companies to run the Service. They handle information only on our behalf and may not use it for anything else.

How long we keep it

We keep your account, lists, recipes and households while you use the app. Prices and products stay in the shared price history, which is the point of the app, but they are only linked to your account by its random identifier. When you ask us to delete your information we delete it from the server, and it leaves the backups within 14 days.

Your rights and deleting your information

Under POPIA you may ask what personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it or delete it, and object to how we use it.

If you are unhappy with how we have handled your information, you can also complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.

Security

We protect your information with encrypted connections, an encrypted store for loyalty cards on your phone, and a server that only a few people can reach. No way of sending or storing information is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security, but we will tell you without delay if your information is ever exposed.

Links to other sites

The app and this website link to other sites, such as Google Play. We do not run those sites and are not responsible for their content or privacy practices. Please read their privacy policies.

Children's privacy

The Service is not meant for anyone under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If we learn that a child under 13 has given us personal information, we delete it. If you are a parent or guardian and know that your child has given us personal information, please contact us.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time, and will post the new version on this page with a new effective date. Please check it now and then.
